The Project#
Null Angel is a solo project — one person writing lyrics, directing the music, and making the artwork. The sound sits between industrial metal and brostep: half-time grooves, sub bass, distorted guitar, and a female vocal that moves between breathy and screaming.
The writing is character work. Every song is a fictional person from Houston or the surrounding Gulf Coast — the freeway sprawl, the humidity that never breaks, the strip centers and the ship channel haze — talking about their own life in their own words. None of them think they’re the problem. That’s the point.
Houston is the right city for it because it has no center to speak of and no zoning to keep anything apart. A refinery, a megachurch, a taqueria, and a half-empty office park share a block. Everyone drives, so everyone is alone for an hour a day. A city largely built by people who came from somewhere else — which means the songs sometimes leave it, following a family line back to wherever it started. The record is set in that: people passing each other at speed, never quite in the same frame.
The name works on the same logic — null (the void, the zero-state, the empty set) paired with angel (aspiration, the reach toward something unreachable). A person who wants out and can’t name the door.
The voices#
Amber recurs — she’s the closest thing to a through-line, and her vocabulary narrows across the record until she can’t say the thing that would get her out. But she isn’t alone on it. Others get their own track and their own logic: a service worker running out of patience, a Houston grandchild piecing together a grandmother from childhood trips up to Ohio, someone refreshing a phone at 2:17 a.m. and calling it love, a voice selling you something it doesn’t believe in.
They overlap without meeting. Same heat, same freeway, different cars.
How the music is made#
Lyrics first, always — the character exists before the song does. Music is then generated with Suno (chords, arrangement, vocal performances), prompted against the written words, auditioned across a lot of takes, and cut to what serves the narrator. The rest is built in Reaper: arrangement and structure, drum grooves, MIDI CC automation driven by stem analysis, and ambient texture passes.
Releases#
Somnomancer — nine tracks, released August 2026. Nine people in one city. Everything is on Suno.
