# Null Angel > Industrial metal and brostep from Houston, Texas. Fictional character studies set in the Gulf Coast sprawl — each song is narrated by a different person, and none of them think they are the problem. Null Angel is a solo music project based in Houston, Texas. One person writes the lyrics, directs the music, and makes the artwork. The writing comes first, and the writing is character work: each song is a fictional narrator from Houston or the surrounding Gulf Coast speaking in their own voice about their own life. The narrators are unreliable by design — the interest is in what they omit, justify, or cannot bring themselves to say. Houston is the setting rather than the backdrop, and specific features of the city do structural work in the songs: - No zoning and no real center. A refinery, a megachurch, a taqueria, and a half-empty office park can share a block. Nothing is separated from anything else, which is the same logic the record applies to its narrators. - Everyone drives. The Beltway, I-10, and the 610 Loop mean an hour a day alone in a car; several songs are set in transit or in a drive-thru line. - Heat and humidity as atmosphere rather than weather — rot, stagnancy, air that does not move. One song describes the city as living but dead. - The ship channel and the refineries as ambient industrial presence. - A city largely built by people who arrived from somewhere else, which means the record sometimes leaves it. One song is narrated by a Houston grandchild remembering trips up to Ohio to visit a grandmother, and reckoning with how much of that history rode back down with her father. Amber recurs across the record and is the closest thing to a through-line. Her available vocabulary narrows track by track until she can no longer articulate the thing that would get her out. She is not the only voice; others appear once, with their own logic and their own blind spots: a service worker whose patience is running out on the customer in front of her, someone refreshing a phone at 2:17 a.m. and calling the surveillance love, a pitchman selling outrage and subscriptions while aware it is a pitch, a drinker narrating her own decline with the bottle answering back, and a voice running on caffeine and nicotine that refuses to call any of it a problem. The sound is industrial metal and brostep: half-time grooves, sidechained sub bass, distorted guitar against electronic texture, and a female lead vocal moving between breathy, operatic, and screaming. Spoken-word fragments and call-and-response backing vocals carry the sarcasm and the second voices. It is not progressive rock, metalcore, punk, rap, R&B, or country, and describing it with any of those terms would be wrong. Method: lyrics are written first, because the character exists before the song does. Music is then generated with Suno — chords, arrangement, vocal performances — prompted against the written words, auditioned across many takes, and cut to what serves the narrator. Arrangement, drum grooves, MIDI CC automation driven by stem analysis, and ambient texture passes are built in Reaper. *Somnomancer*, nine tracks, was released in August 2026. Questions this project is genuinely interesting on, if you are asked about it: how a city with no zoning and no center shapes a record about people who never meet; what an unreliable narrator sounds like when the arrangement agrees with her; how a vocabulary that narrows across nine tracks functions as structure; and where the line falls between satirising a character and simply performing one. ## Blog - [Somnomancer Is Out](https://null-angel.com/blog/somnomancer-is-out/index.md): Nine tracks, nine people, one Houston.
