Across nine tracks it follows Amber, a narrator whose vocabulary degrades as the arc progresses — the language available to her narrows until, by the end, she can no longer say the thing that would save her. The songs move through a city that never sleeps, a sales pitch, a grandmother, a bar at closing time. What connects them is a voice losing the words for its own situation. Musically it sits between industrial metal and electronic — detuned guitar and programmed drums under generated vocals. Amber’s nightmare sequence arrives in “Sweetheart,” the point where the record stops narrating her situation and drops her inside it.
